Dashboard districts with no outline

How to read it

Cases are suspected meningitis cases reported to WHO's meningitis dashboard, for one week or the whole year. Districts with no cases are left blank; hatching means no report.

Thresholds are the dashboard's alerts and epidemics: epidemic at 10 or more cases per 100,000 people in a week, alert at 3 to 10 per 100,000 with at least 2 cases. Over a whole year, the colour counts the weeks spent over a threshold.

Season shows how bunched each district's cases are in the calendar, in an average year of 2021–25: each week is averaged over the years that reported it. Strength runs from 0, cases spread evenly through the year, to 1, all of them in the same week. A clear season is 0.5 or more, some season 0.25 to 0.5, and little or no season under 0.25. Districts with fewer than 20 cases get no class. The chart splits each week's cases into those that came in weeks the district was over the threshold and the rest.

Boundary history shows WHO's district and region outlines for each year from 2015, for all 26 countries of the meningitis belt; the other views cover the nine study countries. Outlines that changed from the year before flash orange.

Selecting: click a district or region to keep its details on the right. Cmd-click (Ctrl-click on Windows) to select several and see their totals. Esc clears the selection.

Where the sources disagree

Chad lists far more districts in the dashboard (199 in 2026) than WHO's map has outlines (126, from 2017), so the views with cases show it by its 23 provinces, each adding up all its districts. Boundary history draws WHO's district outlines.

Districts with no outline on WHO's map are counted in their region and named when you hover over it. They are never drawn on a guessed shape.

Split districts that WHO's map doesn't draw, such as Bamako's communes, are drawn on the original district's outline, with their cases added up.

Boundary dates: WHO's map dates a change to when the map was updated, often years late. Its records start in 2000. The first change it records is dated 2011 (Sudan and South Sudan), and 2016 in the nine study countries, where Ghana's 2012 districts appear only from 2018. After 2020 it showed no change until its update of 14 October 2026, which adds outlines dated 2025 in Cameroon, Benin, Kenya and Uganda, and 2021 in Ethiopia and Senegal. In Cameroon and Benin the new outlines are drawn from the first year the dashboard reports each new district (2021 to 2023), not from 2025. Benin's Abomey-Calavi and Porto-Novo stay whole: WHO splits each into three, but the dashboard still reports each as one district. Five new Cameroon districts and most of Chad's new ones still have no outline.

Names: the dashboard and WHO's map share no district codes, so districts are matched by name. Most match exactly; each of the others (another spelling, an abbreviation, a renamed district) was checked one by one.
